Manchester City humbled Liverpool by 4-0 on Wednesday to lay down a title marker ahead of next season. The Reds arrived the Etihad as Premier League Champions following City’s defeat at Chelsea last week.
Their host gave them a guard of honour before the game but what was to follow was a night of misery for Jurgen Klopp’s men. Despite a decent start to the game, the Reds were blown apart by the brilliance of City’s attack.
Joe Gomez who had a torrid game brought down Raheem Sterling for a penalty that was promptly dispatched by Kevin De Bruyne. Sterling got his first goal against his former club in nine games cutting in for a tidy finish beyond Alisson in goal.
Impressive young attacker Phil Foden got in on the act following a superb pass from De Bruyne.
Halftime couldn’t come quickly for the Champions who had been subjected to a drubbing. The second half saw a better performance for the Reds but City scored a fourth with Chamberlain deflecting a Raheem Sterling shot.
Pep rang the changes and substitute Riyad Mahrez made it five but the goal was chalked off after consultation with VAR.
City ran away as comfortable winners and suggested that next season could be a difficult campaign for Liverpool as they look to wrestle their crown.
