January has been and gone. We are just over midway through the Premier League season. Clear weaknesses are now easy to decipher in many Premier League teams. In this article I identify the areas Arsenal show clear weakness in, and the players they should target in those areas.

Securing quality Centre-Backs

When Sokratis arrived in the summer, not much was expected of him but he has been surprisingly, rather good. However, he still makes mistakes more often than Arsenal need and can demonstrate a similar rash nature to the one possessed by Mustafi, at times.

Holding was in the form of his career at the start of the season, delivering brilliant performances against Liverpool, Tottenham and Wolves amongst others. This was unfortunately brought to an end after he suffered a ruptured ACL against Manchester United. This has now ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Arsenal desperately need defensive reinforcements

A must for Arsenal this summer, more than anything else, is to sign an established world class centre-half. They will partnering one of Holding or Sokratis, or accompanying them in a back three.

The likes of Koulibaly, Alderweireld and Manolas are those who spring to mind, all would come at a significant price. The question remains, will Arsenal be prepared to splash big money to sort out their defensive problems?

Finding a new Winger

The lack of an out and out winger at the Emirates is also certainly a cause for concern. The closest to an out-and-out winger playing at the club right now would probably be Alex Iwobi. He is a player who has shown bright sparks this season, but remains fairly inconsistent. The only other real option is Bukayo Saka, a seventeen-year-old with one senior Premier League appearance off the bench to his name.

Iwobi…is he the player to help Arsenal regain their top four place?

The need for a winger is very clear for this Arsenal team. This is because it would provide width and the ability to stretch a teams defence. This could particularly come in handy against teams who like to dig their heels in. Possible options include Nicolas Pepe and Yannick Carrasco, the latter of which Arsenal came close to signing in January.

Arsenal solve one issue in January

Denis Suarez joined from Barcelona on loan till the end of the season, with an option to buy. A forward moving midfielder is in desperate need with Aaron Ramsey on the way out and Mesut Ozil out of favour with Unai Emery. Suarez has the ability to run at defenders and be the link between defence and attack with fluidity and pace.

Can Denis Suarez help turn Arsenal’s season around?

Arsenal must address these issues come July if they want to re-enter the Champions League and possibly challenge for the Premier League title. Money may be the only problem but we will have to wait till the time comes to see if this plays an important factor.
