The 18-year-old potential star, Phil Foden, has all the attributes to become a top player. The big  question is, however, what path will he choose?

Will he stay in the Premier League? Will he play for England? I will discuss all of that in the article below!

Staying at Manchester City?

Foden came through the ranks at City and is being managed by one of the best managers in Pep Guardiola. He broke onto the scene when he was part of the U18 English World Cup winning side. Phil Foden had a few appearances last year in competitions such as the Carabao Cup, group stages of Champions league and early rounds of the FA Cup, however, the Manchester born and bred lad has shone this season and has been given many more opportunities.

He’s impressed when he’s played this season. He’s notched up with a few goals too, one coming off the bench to score in a 9-0 thrashing in the first leg of the Carabao Cup against Burton Albion.

Why would he benefit from staying?

If Phil decides to stay at City, it would be a good choice as not only does he have arguably the best manager in the world, but he’s learning, every single day, from international, world class players who also play in his position; David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan.

These players are serial, ruthless winners who have proved to be consistent, top performers in the Premier League. In addition to this, City’s style of football very much so suits Foden.

City dominate nearly every game and have a large share of the possession. Foden is a player who likes to receive the ball on the half turn, play intricate passes with teammates and then find a killer pass. His cultured left foot and silky skills make his suitable for this role.

With someone like Fernandinho playing behind him, this would enable him to play further forward and express his talent. Moreover, City look destined for greatness for many years to come, they’re going from strength to strength and will definitely win many more trophies in the future – This is something that Phil will be eager to be a part of.

Gareth Southgate’s plans?

Phil has not yet played a senior game for England’s first team, but he’s due to receive a call up in the imminent, near distant future. The system England play, with 3 at the back, two wingbacks, a defensive midfielder, two attacking midfielders and two strikers will definitely benefit Foden.

In Foden’s position now, there are players such as James Maddison, Dele Alli, Jesse Lingard etc, but Phil will be looking to contest for a spot. In future Euro and World Cup tournaments, he could be pivotal for the nation’s success.

Going abroad?

Foden may want to pursue the career of playing abroad. Although Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson are both learning their trade in the Bundesliga with Dortmund and Hoffenheim respectively, only on a loan deal, Phil may want to peruse a permanent career abroad.

If he continues to grow and develop at the rate that’s expected, it will only be a matter of time before the likes of PSG, Real Madrid etc start calling, and the lucrative offer may be appealing to Foden.

Not many English players like going to foreign land, but Foden may start a new trend and it will be interesting to see which path he wants to pursue.
