Wolves have one of the best defensive records so far this season, conceding 6 goals, with only Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City conceding less.

This is all the more impressive having played both Manchester clubs. Wolves have also played 3 more of the top 10 teams from last year.

Nuno Espirito Santos had the third best defence in La Liga with Valencia, 2nd best with Porto and 5th best defence when managing Rio Ave.. To add to his defensive pedigree, he managed the best defence in the championship last year.

Having recorded clean sheets against Burnley and West Ham sandwiched between only conceding 1 against each Manchester team, Wolves look at home in the top flight. It’s a great time to be considering a defender, so who are the best options in the Wolves defence?

Wolves have named the same 11 every match so the options below are those that have started all of those games.

Coady (4.5m)

As the captain he is all but guaranteed his place in the starting 11 when fit. He doesn’t offer the goal scoring threat and has been the deepest lying Wolves outfield player in every game so far. He looks like the worst of the Wolves options.

Bennett (4.1m)

The cheapest option in the defence but that comes at a cost of the potential threat of being dropped at some point during the season. He does have some goal threat however that shouldn’t be expected of a 4.1m option.

Boly (4.6m)

He also has a great chant that goes something along the lines of “We’ve got a big Willy”. If that isn’t enough for you to bring him in, he is the focal point of corners and free kicks which makes him a big goal threat. Over the course of a season, I don’t think he will outscore the wing backs but he is off to a fantastic start.

Jonny & Doherty (4.4m)

Both are very attacking wing backs and have both suffered a price drop. I expect to see many assists from them throughout the season with a few goals thrown in as well. It’s a flip of the coin between them and as always with FPL, luck. I lean towards Jonny as he is more technical than Doherty and more likely to play every game this season.
