Ajax youngster Abdelhak Nouri is awake and communicating after 13 months in a coma.

After spending over a year in a coma, Ajax midfielder Nouri has finally awoken this morning. He has currently been communicating with his family via facial gestures.

The youngster was rushed to hospital in Innsbruck last July, after collapsing during a pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen. He suffered “serious and permanent” brain damage, due to him suffering cardiac arrhythmia.

Over the last 13 months the only major improvement in Nouri’s condition was that he became able to breathe independently without a life-support machine.

However, today that all changed. He woke from his coma and is now awake and communicating with his family. He reportedly “recognised [them] immediately” after opening his eyes for the first time.

As of now we do not know what the future holds for Abdelhak ‘Appie’ Nouri but at least things are moving in the right direction.
