Manchester United have turned their attention towards Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini as their search for another midfielder takes a significant twist.
Jose Mourinho has already brought in Brazilian midfielder Fred to Old Trafford but is looking for an additional acquisition in this position following the departures of Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini.
The Red Devils’ manager had initially signalled towards the services of Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who scored 12 Serie A goals for the Italian side last season, but reports in Serbia have said that the 23 year-old’s extortionate price tag has put the Manchester side off the signing.
And United have quickly moved towards an alternative option and have identified Pellegrini as the most likely option as Roma have prepared for his departure following the signings of three separate midfielders.
The Giallorossi recently completed the signings of Dinamo Zagreb’s Ante Coric and Atalanta’s Bryan Cristante to replace the outgoing Radjia Nainggolan, who completed a move to Inter Milan this week.
But Roma are now anticipating the additional departure of Pellegrini and have subsequently moved for Paris Saint-Germain’s Javier Pastore in a €25 million move.

Pellegrini joined Roma twelve months ago from Sassuolo as he followed manager Eusebio Di Francesco to the Italian capital from I Neroverdi. He made 27 league appearances for Roma this season, while he also helped Roma reach the Champions League semi-final, where they were defeated by beaten finalists Liverpool 7-6 on aggregate.
He has also been capped six times by Italy, who failed to reach the World Cup Finals in Russia following a play-off defeat to Sweden.
Mourinho is looking for another midfield option to compete with new signing Fred, along with last season’s options including Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, and Ander Herrera. It is expected that Scott McTominay, who made 13 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils last season, will seek a temporary move away in search of regular first-team football to aid his development.
Celtic are the latest side to express an interest in the 21 year-old, with the Scottish Premier League champions looking to bolster their midfield following the impending departure of Stuart Armstrong to Southampton.
The Premier League season kicks off on 11th August, with United looking to bring Pellegrini in time for their first day of pre-season training on 9th July.
